  Hysteria is a complex psychological disorder characterized by a wide range of symptoms, including physical symptoms such as paralysis, blindness, and seizures, and psychological symptoms such as anxiety, depression, and dissociation (American Psychiatric Association, 2013). Historically, hysteria was believed to be a disorder that primarily affected women, and was thought to be caused by a lack of self-control and emotional instability (Charcot, 1887). Recent research has suggested that low self-esteem may be a contributing factor in the development and maintenance of hysteria (Gleaves et al., 2000).
